It is important to keep in mind that black rubber toughened CA glues have an extended bonding time due to the added rubber compound. It can take as much as 24 hours to fully cure when larger volumes of the adhesive is applied. For these instances, use of accelerator is highly recommended.
Given the option to acquire CA glue without an accelerator, you may be questioning the necessity of having one. To address this inquiry, it is essential to take into account the following factors:
Temperature influence on cure time: Curing is expedited in warmer temperatures, whereas colder temperatures decelerate the process. The recommended working temperature for CA glues is around 75°F – 80°F. It is advisable to use an accelerator when the ambient temperature of your workspace falls below this range.
Substrate material surface energy: Denser and nonporous surfaces hinder the glue’s effective bonding, requiring more time for adhesion. Enhancing surface energy through abrasion with sandpaper or a file is recommended. An accelerator becomes crucial to hasten the attainment of initial bonding strength. Wood and metal typically exhibit high surface energy, while plastics and rubber possess low surface energy.
Viscosity and type of CA glue: Medium-Thick and Thick CA glues generally have prolonged curing times, necessitating a solution to avoid extended waiting periods. Applying CA glue in multiple thin layers with proper curing between each layer is advised for optimal results. Accelerators are indispensable to expedite the curing time, especially for certain CA glues like the Black CA variant, which contains a rubberized component that complicates natural curing.
In conclusion, the decision to use an accelerator with CA glue is subjective and based on personal experience. While some individuals are content with the natural curing time of CA glue, others prefer the added control and speed provided by an accelerator.
