Description
6″ x 2″ Flat Linear Roll Spider
6″ x 2″ flat linear roll spider has a consistent roll or corrugation pattern throughout it’s entire surface. The corrugation shape is uniform, providing a consistent restoring force as the voice coil moves. Typically made from fabric impregnated with stiffening resin, the material choice and treatment affect flexibility and durability. This design offers a linear compliance characteristic, meaning the restoring force remains consistent across the entire range of motion.
Do I need to stack multiple spiders?
Stacking multiple 6″ x 2″ flat linear roll spiders on top of each other in a subwoofer design offers several benefits. Multiple spiders provide additional support to the voice coil, ensuring it remains centered and stable. This reduces the risk of coil rubbing against the magnet assembly, enhancing overall speaker reliability. The combined stiffness from stacked spiders allows the speaker to handle higher power levels without distortion. This is particularly useful in high-performance audio systems where loud volumes and powerful outputs are required. Stacking spiders increases control over the voice coil’s movement, especially during large excursions. This helps maintain linearity and reduces distortion for clearer sound reproduction. Multiple spiders also improve the damping of the speaker system, reducing unwanted resonances and vibrations. This leads to a cleaner and more accurate audio output, especially at high frequencies.
By stacking spiders with different stiffness characteristics, designers can fine-tune the compliance of the speaker suspension system. This allows for more precise control over the speaker’s performance, optimizing it for specific audio applications. The additional layers of spiders distribute mechanical stress more evenly, reducing wear and tear on individual components. This can extend the overall lifespan of the speaker, making it more durable in demanding environments. In summary, stacking multiple spiders enhances stability, power handling, control over excursions, damping characteristics, customization of compliance, and overall durability, resulting in improved performance and longevity.

Mike (verified owner) –
I used this spider to repair my 8w7. The inner diameter will need to be widened to fit over the 8w7 voice coil. I did this carefully in about 15-20 minutes using a dremel and a sanding drum attachment.
Note: After modification, the first roll in the spider on the inside will take up some space in the gap at the bottom of your factory collar. This gap is used to house the solder connections from the coil to the tinsel leads. Losing some space here made it difficult to sit the down collar flush with the spider. Through some trial and error, I ended up removing the factory tinsels and replacing with 1.6mm PVC insulated leads (https://thelordofbass.com/product/1-6mm-braided-tinsel-lead-wire-with-insulated-pvc-jacket/). This required some chiseling and dremeling to remove the factory tinsel leads and adhesives. I also removed some of the material in the gap at the bottom of the collar to create more space for the solder connections.
