JL Audio 13W7 / 13W7AE Subwoofer Spider

The JL Audio 13W7 / 13W7AE progressive-roll spider targets builders who demand accurate suspension control, long-term durability, and dependable centering in high-performance subwoofers. The progressive-roll design increases stiffness as excursion rises. Because of this, the spider stays soft and responsive at low excursion levels; however, it tightens control during heavy bass output. As a result, the suspension behavior closely matches the original JL 13W7 design and therefore helps protect the voice coil from mechanical damage under high-stress conditions.

Progressive Compliance for High-Output Performance

The uniform corrugation pattern delivers smooth movement at lower output levels. As the cone travels farther, the spider gradually raises its restoring force. Because this transition happens progressively, the voice coil remains centered in the magnetic gap. Consequently, the risk of bottoming out or coil rub decreases. Meanwhile, the suspension continues to produce clean and accurate mid-bass response at moderate listening levels. In contrast to linear designs, this progressive compliance maintains control during hard bass hits without sacrificing musical detail.

Direct-Fit VCID Design (OEM Collar Not Compatible)

This aftermarket spider uses a smaller voice coil inner diameter (VCID) that installs directly onto the voice coil during assembly. In contrast, the OEM JL Audio 13W7 spider relies on a larger inner opening and requires a separate collar ring. For this reason, this design removes the collar interface entirely.

Do not use the OEM collar with this spider. The VCID matches the voice coil diameter and bonds directly to the coil. Otherwise, attempting to install a collar will cause improper fitment. By eliminating the collar, installation becomes simpler; additionally, tolerance stack-up is reduced. As a result, the suspension maintains correct geometry and consistent attachment without unnecessary components.

Durable Nomex Construction

Each 13W7 spider uses high-strength Nomex fabric with a heat-resistant resin system. Because of this construction, the spider withstands extreme temperatures generated by high-power amplifiers. Moreover, the material resists sag, tearing, and fatigue over time. As a result, the suspension maintains consistent performance through repeated high-output cycles.
