Sundown Audio ZV5 Dual 2 Ohm 3″ Voice Coil
Our Sundown Audio ZV5 voice coil features a 4-layer flat aluminum wire, precision-wound on a black anodized aluminum former. The former helps dissipate heat during operation, while the anodized finish enhances thermal transfer and resists corrosion and wear. This combination ensures consistent performance and long-term reliability, even in high-power applications.
Aluminum wire further enhances heat dissipation and reduces weight, making it ideal for high-performance audio. Its lightweight nature allows the voice coil to move faster and more responsively, improving efficiency and delivering dynamic sound reproduction. Aluminum’s excellent conductivity, relative to its weight, ensures effective power transfer with minimal loss. Although less dense than copper, its reduced mass improves speed and transient response, contributing to crisp, detailed audio.
This voice coil uses flat wire instead of round wire. Flat wire offers better packing density, allowing more wire to be wound into the same space. This increases efficiency and reduces inductance, enabling a quicker, more accurate response. The flat wire design also improves thermal management, with a larger surface area that dissipates heat more effectively, reducing the risk of overheating.
Flat wire enhances power handling by managing more current without overheating, ensuring consistent, reliable performance. Finally, it reduces distortion and provides more stable impedance across the frequency range, resulting in cleaner, more consistent sound output.
Adhesives for Subwoofer Repair and Reliability
To ensure long-lasting reliability, this voice coil is constructed using a high-temperature adhesive capable of withstanding extreme temperatures up to 500°F. As a result, it performs well under demanding conditions and has earned customer trust. By contrast, competitors’ coils often fail due to inferior adhesives.
When repairing a subwoofer, it’s essential to use the correct adhesive for each component to ensure proper bonding:
-
Voice Coil to Spider and Cone: Black rubber CA glue provides a strong, flexible bond for these critical connections.
-
Surround Lip to Frame: Use L3890 black rubber glue, which maintains flexibility to handle the inherent vibrations in subwoofer operation.
-
Dust Caps and Lead Wires: Likewise, L3890 glue is ideal for securing dust caps and dressing lead wires, ensuring they remain securely in place during use.
Using adhesives formulated specifically for speaker repair is crucial. They are designed to withstand the unique stresses and vibrations experienced by subwoofer components. Therefore, always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Soldering Aluminum Voice Coil Wires
Soldering aluminum voice coil wires can be challenging due to aluminum’s natural oxide layer, which hinders standard soldering methods. Thus, to achieve a reliable bond, it’s essential to use both a flux and solder specifically designed for aluminum.
For best results, we recommend our Ultra Gold Flux Soldering Kit, which is formulated to effectively disrupt the oxide layer and facilitate a strong connection between aluminum components. Otherwise, attempting to solder without these specialized materials may result in weak joints or even complete connection failure. Therefore, investing in the appropriate soldering kit is essential for ensuring the durability and performance of aluminum voice coil repairs.
